Why these programs exist?

DirMS-CL HELP

This program requires Administrative rights to run.   You must run it from a command prompt.   To get a command prompt, go to the windows start menu, click "Run", type cmd and then press "enter"

Use the DOS command cd to change directories to the program location.  If the program is located in c:\dirms, then type "c: <enter>" to change to the c drive, then type "cd  \dirms <enter>" at the command prompt.  Note:  c:\dirms is just an example.  You must know where you downloaded the DirMS program.

You would then start the program as follows:

        dirms c

This will defragment drive "c" on your computer.

dirms -GR

create file "reginput.txt" containing registration info to send to dirms.com

dirms -R <registration string>

enter registration information received from dirms.com

All defrag commands also move files to the beginning of the drive with the exception of "dirms <drive letter> defrag" which performs the defrag without moving files.

The default defrag command makes 2 passes (defrag, move, defrag again).

The defrag modes available are:

·        default defrag

·        defrag only (files are not moved)

·        compact (minimize space between files) (this mode slow)

·        move [date|lcn] (move by either date or cluster)

The following options can be used with all defrag modes:

-q = quickly (don't wait on OS to move previous file)

-p = # of passes (default =2)

-o <session file name> = create file with session info

-a <session file name> = append session info to existing file

-f <full file path> = defrag a single file

Examples:

dirms <drive letter>

default defrag

dirms <drive letter> -q

defrag quickly

dirms <drive letter> -p 3 -q

defrag with 3 passes, quickly

dirms <drive letter> defrag

defrag files without moving

dirms <drive letter> compact

minimize space between files,

dirms <drive letter> compact -q

only compact files that have free space before and after the file

dirms <drive letter> move date –q

move by date, oldest files at the beginning of the drive, quickly

dirms <drive letter> move lcn -q

move by cluster to the beginning of the drive, minimal defrag, quickly

dirms <drive letter> -a <session file name> -q

defrag, append session info to file, quickly

dirms <drive letter> -o <session file name> -q

defrag, write session info to file, quickly

dirms <drive letter> -f <full file path>
